Shade Avenue Complete Street Project
|
The City of Sarasota intends to construct a “complete street” on Shade Avenue from City limits (Hibiscus Street) to 15th Street, including the portion that runs thru the Alta Vista neighborhood.
See much more info at the City's Shade Ave Complete Street website. April 2025 update: The Shade Avenue Complete Streets Phase 1 (Wood Street to Lime Avenue) and additional phases have been placed on hold until City Commission provides direction on where to prioritize funding for projects in the capital improvement program.
Below is the concept for the intersection at Shade Ave and Novus St (the "Novus Bump," that odd little roundabout, which will be removed). The concept does not include signage or pavement markings but should give you a general idea of what the intersection might look like. |
April 2024 update: The section from Wood Street north across the Legacy Trail crossing to Pelican will be the first section to be done.
The "Novus Bump," that weird little nonstandard rotary thing at Novus & Shade will be removed, replaced with reconfigured turn radius, some raised pedestrian crossings, and small center medians on Novus, with Stop Signs on Novus, and Shade become the through street.
No separate bike lane will be built (due presumably to narrowness of street); sharrows (shared-use arrows painted on street) will have to suffice.
Existing sidewalk on east side of Shade will be widened, and new sidewalk will be built on west side of Shade, where none now exists.

Earlier 2023 preliminary public survey included issues such as:
* Canopy trees need to be added between Hatton and Bahia Vista.
* Pedestrian crosswalks need to be added at Bay St and at Browning St
* Fix the puddles that collect at Tami Sola and at Novus. (Major drainage issues!!!)
* sidewalk at canal overpass (North of Hatton) needs to be kept clear of sand and weeds.
* Sidewalks need to be added on the West side between Ringling and Wood St.

Dec 2023 update: SURVEY! The City is requested more community input for Shade Ave improvement project. Based on prior feedback, they are considering removing that weird little "raised bump" traffic circle at Shade and Novus (a.k.a. "Kelly's Bane"). Various options were posted on the survey page, which ended 1/22/24.
