RESURFACING US301/Washington Blvd - Fall/Winter 2026
September Construction Update: Construction scheduled, tentatively beginning Oct 5, Resurfacing Project, Washington Blvd (US301) from Mound St to 10th St.
"The Improvements under this Contract consist of milling and resurfacing, curb and gutter, sidewalk, signalization, lighting, and signing and pavement markings on SR 683 (US 301) from US 41 to South of 10th Street in Sarasota County. Contractor: Ajax Paving Industries of Florida LLC Total Contract Amount: $3,142,904.53 Contract Calendar Days: 225" (that's about 7 months).
"Single lane closure shall occur only during non-peak hours on non-event days. 8pm to 6am Sunday through Thursday nights
...Only close sidewalk along on along one side of the roadway at a time, as needed. One corner should be closed at a time at signalized intersections to allow for pedestrian movements. ...maintain pedestrian access throughout all phases..."
Future Repaving US301/Washington Blvd between Mound Street and 10th Street. Project includes (among many other things) adding a pedestrian crossing light at South Payne Parkway, a.k.a. Alderman Street, across to Senior Friendship Center, on the north side of the Mound/Washington 41/301 mega-intersection. As of May, FDOT confirmed that this project IS indeed projected to start this summer; FDOT will communicate with residents and City a few weeks before starting.
On Sep 2, FDOT project manager Amber Albritton hosted an info table (at the Traffic Calming Open House) on a DIFFERENT project: "Resurfacing Tamiami Trail," which includes the area of US41/301 from Bay St south, past the hospital, NOT the above section of US301 (Washington Blvd).
What to expect during construction?
• Roadway paving will be performed at night to minimize inconvenience.
• There will be no complete road closures.
• Temporary lane closures will occur during non-peak hours.
• Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout the duration of the project with only short-term detours.
• Access to businesses, residences, and bus stops will be maintained.
• Upgrades include a “Do Not Block” pavement message at Adams Lane: "Don't Block the Box."
• One SIGNALIZED midblock crossing near South Payne Parkway.
• The other existing midblock crossing near 6th Street will be upgraded with Rapid Flashing Beacons.
