SPD: School Zone Safety Program
The City of Sarasota, in partnership with the Sarasota Police Department, is continuing efforts to enhance student safety with the School Zone Safety Program.
Effective Monday, Feb. 3, a 30-day warning grace period will begin for two new school zones -- Alta Vista Elementary School and Southside Elementary School. Speed cameras in those zones will be activated and warnings will be issued to drivers exceeding the speed limit by 11 mph or more.
The safety program already includes Tuttle Elementary School and Cardinal Mooney High School, where a 30-day warning grace period is concluding. Beginning Feb. 5, registered owners of vehicles caught speeding in those two zones will be issued a $100 violation through the U.S. mail.
It’s important to note that speed cameras operate throughout the school day — not only when flashing lights are active -- but also 30 minutes before school begins and 30 minutes after school ends. Cameras will not monitor traffic on weekends, holidays, or outside those hours.
The program will expand to a total of six school zones, including:
Alta Vista Elementary School
Southside Elementary School
Tuttle Elementary School
Cardinal Mooney High School
Sarasota Military Academy
Sarasota High School
** After a warning grace period ends, violations will be issued to drivers traveling 11 mph or more above the speed limit, with images thoroughly reviewed by the SPD before citations are mailed. **
Traffic Calming City Town Hall Meeting
Wed Feb 19, 5:30 – 7:30PM
City Commission Chamber, Room 101, 1565 1st Street, Sarasota, FL 34326
Traffic calming is a set of roadway treatments engineers can add that alter driver behavior and reduce the negative impacts motorists can have on pedestrians and cyclists. Traffic calming can help to reduce speed, vehicle crashes, and in turn, increase pedestrian and bicyclist usage.
These measures can include:
▪ Horizontal Deflections (roundabouts, traffic circles)
▪ Vertical Deflections (speed tables, raised intersections)
▪ Street Width Reduction (median islands, on-street parking)
▪ Routing Restrictions (median barriers, splitters)
Education and enforcement are also considered to be traffic calming measures but should be used in conjunction with physical measures when possible.

Vacation rental owners encouraged to register properties by Oct. 31
The City of Sarasota is encouraging all owners of vacation rentals within the Sarasota city limits to register their vacation rental properties by Oct. 31 to avoid late fees.
The deadline for vacation rental registration is Dec. 31. As of Jan. 1, 2025, operating a vacation rental without a certificate when one is required will constitute a violation of City Code.
The registration requirement applies to single, two, three, and four-family dwelling units operating as vacation rentals within Residential Single and Multi-Family Zoning Districts. Owner occupied vacation rentals, condominiums, cooperatives, or properties rented for 30 days or more are exempt from registration.
The City Commission adopted Ordinance 24-5506 on Feb. 5, 2024, expanding the existing vacation rental registration requirement from the barrier islands to the mainland. Approximately 140 properties are registered on the barrier islands, with 650 additional properties expected to register on the mainland.
Applications can be submitted online via the online portal or in-person at 1575 2nd Street, Third Floor. If you are unsure if a vacation rental certificate of registration is required, please email [email protected] or call 941-263-6623.
Vacation rental owners are encouraged to review the information on the City of Sarasota’s vacation rental webpage and to contact City staff for guidance throughout the application process.
