SHS construction alert: Hatton Street 2024-2026
In progress: a long-planned major renovation of buildings at Sarasota High; new HVAC (air conditioning) system, for one thing. Some classes have been moved into the portable classrooms; doing it in six phases; expected to take 2+? years. Notice all the orange Gilbane fencing along Hatton Street (canal-side, which is county-owned land); they have fenced off that shell lot west of Shade (across from the batting cage), plus the grass field east of Shade, to use for staging materials & equipment, worker parking, and other construction needs, for the duration of the project. No, nothing's being "built" there, just construction staging. |
Oh Yes, Sarasota's been GROWING; it's not your imagination.
Here's a rough graphic on high-density developments -- condos & apartments -- just in the immediate Alta Vista neighborhood area, developed from the 1950's to present, including sites in planning. (Park Lane and City Walk date from years ago.) And -- i predict -- there's gonna be more to come... The original local high density development, Sarasota Mobile Home Park, is long gone. Higher residential density, especially in an "inner city" area such as our neighborhood, has both negatives AND positives. Duany recently noted that, in any event, Sarasota is no longer, and is not gonna be going back to, the small town it used to be. |
BAHIA VISTA APARTMENTS Starting construction now: new apartment building at Tuttle & Bahia Vista intersection. See Bahia Vista Apartments for more info. |

Upcoming Exhibit Jul-Oct 2024
"Modern Masterpiece Uncovered": Victor Lundy's Galloway's Furniture Building, at Ringling College's Sarasota Art Museum No longer recognizable after decades of reconstructions & deconstructions, the building later became local artist Ben Stahl's Museum of the Cross, and later VisionWorks, now a part of Ringling College's Museum Campus. |
Nearby Vacant Lands: I PREDICT
that this (red) parcel, between Payne Park Village and the Health Center parking lot, between School Ave and Legacy Trail/ Lyra, currently a vacant lot, will be developed at some future time. (And no, that little road, previously called Shopping Way, is NOT a public street; it is private property, same owner.) that this (blue) parcel, owned by the City, between Washington Blvd & Payne Park tennis courts -- but not a part of Payne Park -- will be developed someday. What do you think will be built? Condos? Hotel? Tallest building in Sarasota? Affordable housing (yeah, right!)? Oh, don't ya wonder? |
This website was created as a bulletin board, not a discussion forum, to share info focussed on the Alta Vista neighborhood. |
